Daydreamer – New Single From Ainsley Costello
One of the advantages of Indie Pop is that performers are not confined to a single genre but can blend influences and styles to create innovative and compelling songs.
Ainsley Costello’s new single “Daydreamer” combines acoustic rock, Americana and atmospheric pop for aspirational song in the same vein as Sheryl Crow’s “Every Day is a Winding Road” or “Castle on the Hill” by Ed Sheeran.
“The song is about people staying true to their dreams but also acting on them – dream and do,” said Costello who moved with her family to Nashville last year to advance her career.
Costello’s fifth single of 2021 (“The Great Unknown”, “Rent Free”, “Verona” and “Metanoia” were the first four) is a cleverly deceptive song with a double-time rhythm just under the surface moving the song forward, similar to “There’s Nothin’ Holding Me Back” by Shawn Mendes. Costello’s vocals however are rhythmically more varied, creatively stepping away from the standard template.
Costello memorably draws out the three notes that comprise the song’s title picking up the tempo for the following lines “You stay up with the sun but don’t go to bed with the moon. They can’t tell you what to do because you’re the one that gets to choose.” The rhythmic change provides an urgent conversational tone.
Costello’s graceful vocals, airy backing vocals and a pensive electric guitar are laid over an energetic rhythmic section. The interplay and contrast add to the song’s poignancy.
Like Mendes, Costello knows how to write and deliver hooks. As “Daydreamer” soars it feels natural rather than calculated. Her voice is plaintive yet authoritative, with the power to be taken seriously.
